Your Google Maps listing does its job. People find you, call, and leave reviews. But 45% of consumers now use ChatGPT or another AI tool for local business recommendations, according to BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026.

It can feel like you suddenly have four places to show up instead of one. The good news is that all four draw on overlapping sources, so one tidy setup covers most of them. If you have wondered how a Google AI Mode local business answer differs from AI Overviews, ChatGPT or Google Maps, this guide puts all four side by side, with real numbers, trade examples, a quick self-check and one checklist.

In BrightLocal's 2026 study, one of its tracked businesses showed up in 66% of Google Maps searches, against 38% for AI Overviews, 33% for ChatGPT and 32% for AI Mode. Google's AI tools lean on your Business Profile and website. ChatGPT leans on your website, Yelp and Bing. One tidy setup covers most of it.

Key takeaways

  • In one large 2026 study, the businesses being watched showed up on Google Maps far more often than in any AI answer.
  • AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT barely agree on which businesses they name.
  • The same question can get a different list on the next try, so one check proves very little.
  • Your website is the most-cited source overall. One study found AI Mode leans heavily on your Business Profile while AI Overviews leans on websites, and ChatGPT leans more on Yelp and Bing.
  • Nobody can promise an AI tool will name you. Clean, matching details raise your odds.

What is the difference between Google AI Mode and AI Overviews?

AI Overviews is the AI-written summary that appears at the top of a normal Google search when Google thinks it helps. AI Mode is a separate tab in Google where you chat back and forth, and Google answers with a longer write-up and, for local questions, a list of places.

Both can use what Google calls query fan-out, which is Google splitting one question into smaller ones and searching them all at once. Google's guide to AI features says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models, so their answers and links can differ for the same question.

AI Mode is newer. Google started rolling it out to everyone in the US on May 20, 2025, and said its booking help would start with event tickets, restaurant reservations and local appointments.

For local searches, AI Mode looks less like a map and more like a short list. In a May 2025 test of Chicago pizzerias, the agency Human Level found the usual three-business local pack gone, up to ten businesses listed instead, and a map at the end.

The other two surfaces are more familiar. Google Maps (and the local pack, the three-business map box in normal search) ranks businesses from their Google Business Profile. ChatGPT is OpenAI's chat assistant, and when it searches the web it writes its own list of names.

Four places to be found, and none of them send you a memo when they change.

How do Google AI Mode local business results compare with Maps and ChatGPT?

Google Maps named a tracked business (one of the 1,300 businesses BrightLocal was watching) most often, in 66% of searches, in BrightLocal's Local AI Visibility Study (September 2026). The three AI surfaces sat close together: AI Overviews at 38%, ChatGPT at 33% and AI Mode at 32%.

That study ran 200,085 local searches across 1,300 business locations. Here is how the four surfaces line up.

ChatGPTChatGPT app or website33%4.1 on averageWebsites, Yelp and Bing; hardly uses Business Profile

A few notes on reading the table. The AI Mode and AI Overviews splits come from one firm's study, Steady Demand's August 2026 look at local-intent citations, and count only businesses that were already cited. The ChatGPT row comes from the sources BrightLocal saw cited.

OpenAI has not said which sources ChatGPT uses for local answers. Its crawler page says only that sites blocking its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (they can still appear as plain links).

Reach differs a lot too. In BrightLocal's study, 90% of results fell within 38km (about 24 miles) for AI Overviews, 64km (about 40 miles) for AI Mode and 287km (about 178 miles) for ChatGPT.

Some answers named nobody at all. BrightLocal found empty answers 10% of the time on ChatGPT and 11% of the time on both Google AI surfaces.

Why does your business show on Google Maps but not in AI answers?

Your business can show on Google Maps but not in AI answers because Maps ranks mainly from your Google Business Profile, while AI answers read many sources and name only a short list. A strong profile wins on Maps. In AI answers it covers less ground.

Google's Business Profile help says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. Complete, accurate details and more positive reviews help. That is the game a good Maps listing already plays well.

AI answers pull from wider. In BrightLocal's study, business websites made up 42% of all citations, and 93% of the unique sites cited. Google Business Profile came next, then Yelp at 9.5% and Facebook at 2.2%.

The mix also changes by surface. BrightLocal found Google Business Profile important for AI Mode and AI Overviews but "hardly used by ChatGPT," which relies on Yelp and Bing instead. Google's AI surfaces also lean on Facebook.

So getting into Google AI Mode local business answers takes more than a strong profile. If your website is thin, your Yelp page is unclaimed, or your hours differ from site to site, AI has less to go on.

Mismatched details are common. The SOCi Local Visibility Index 2026, reported by BrightLocal, found only 68% of the contact details shown by the AI chat tools it checked, ChatGPT among them, matched the business's Google Business Profile.

If an AI answer gets your details wrong, the fix is almost always the listing it cited, not the AI tool.

Do AI Mode, AI Overviews and ChatGPT name the same businesses?

No. In BrightLocal's 2026 study, AI Mode and AI Overviews shared only 29.3% of the businesses they named, and ChatGPT overlapped just 20% with AI Overviews and 19% with AI Mode.

That surprises most owners. AI Mode and AI Overviews are both Google, yet fewer than a third of their names match. ChatGPT is further off again.

The answers also change between runs of the same question. Repeat searches overlapped by only 23% on ChatGPT, 21% on AI Mode and 33% on AI Overviews. Between 71% and 80% of businesses showed up in half the attempts or fewer.

ChatGPT's much wider reach, out to 287km, is why it sometimes names a business from the next town over.

One check on one surface tells you very little, good or bad. You need a few checks across all four, which is what the self-check below does. For a fuller testing method, see our guide on why ChatGPT recommendations change and how to test fairly.

Which surface should your trade watch first?

Watch the surface your customers use at the moment they need you. Urgent, nearby jobs lean on Maps and AI Mode on a phone. Questions people research before they call, like "which lawyer handles this," lean on ChatGPT and AI Overviews.

Where you work matters too. In the same BrightLocal study, storefront businesses were mentioned 33.6% of the time, against 29.4% for service-area businesses (ones that travel to the customer and hide their address). The gap showed on every surface: ChatGPT 33.7% vs 29.4%, AI Mode 31.9% vs 27.4%, and AI Overviews 38.4% vs 36.9%.

Here is how that plays out by trade. These are examples to think with, not results from real businesses.

  • Emergency plumber or roofer. Say you run a two-van plumbing shop with no storefront. The "burst pipe, open now" caller is on Maps or AI Mode, so your Business Profile hours and service area come first. Then make sure your website names every town you serve, because service-area businesses start a few points behind.
  • Dentist or chiropractor. Say you run a one-location dental office. When Google rolled AI Mode out in May 2025, it said AI Mode's booking help would start with local appointments and restaurant reservations, so keep your booking link, hours and insurance details current on your profile and website.
  • Restaurant. Say you run a neighborhood taqueria. BrightLocal saw Yelp, Tripadvisor and OpenTable among the sites AI cites, so your menu, hours and photos need to match on all of them.
  • Lawyer or accountant. Say you run a two-partner tax practice. People ask longer questions here ("do I need an accountant for an LLC"), and ChatGPT names the most businesses per answer, at 4.1. A website page that answers that exact question gives AI something to quote.

Pro tip: write down the three questions your best customers asked you last month. Those are your test questions for the next section.

How can you check all four surfaces in about 15 minutes?

You can check all four surfaces in roughly 15 minutes a round (our rough estimate) by asking three real customer questions on Google Maps, AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT, writing down who gets named, and repeating on two more days. That is 12 checks per round.

Step 1: Write three questions your customers ask

Pick one urgent question, one "best" question and one price or service question. For a plumber that might be "emergency plumber near me open now," "best plumber in [your town]" and "how much does a water heater install cost in [your town]."

Step 2: Ask each question on all four surfaces

Search from your shop or a customer's area, not from home across town, since distance changes results. Use the Google Maps app, a normal Google search (look for the AI Overview at the top), the AI Mode tab, and ChatGPT with a new temporary chat. Log out, or use a private window, so your own search history doesn't skew Google's answer.

Step 3: Write down what each answer says

Note whether you were named, who else was named, which sites were cited, and whether your phone, hours and address were right. A simple log line works:

Date | Question | Surface | Named? (Y/N) | Others named | Sources shown | My details right?

Step 4: Repeat on two more days

Run the same three questions on two other days that week. Because repeat runs overlapped by only 21-33% in BrightLocal's study, one day's answer is a snapshot, not a verdict.

Step 5: Fix the source that is wrong

If an answer shows old hours, find the site it cited and fix that listing first. If a competitor keeps appearing, look at which sources the answer cited for them and check you are listed there too.

Pro tip: keep the log in one sheet and re-run it monthly. Patterns show up over weeks, not in one afternoon.

What one checklist covers all four surfaces?

One checklist covers all four surfaces because, between them, they lean on five things: your Business Profile (Maps and Google AI), Bing Places and Yelp (ChatGPT), your website (all three AI tools) and your robots.txt file (ChatGPT's crawler). Get those right and every surface has accurate details to work with.

  • Google Business Profile. Fill in every field: categories, services, hours, holiday hours, photos and booking link. Google's AI features guide lists keeping Business Profile info up to date as a good practice. Manage it at Google Business Profile.
  • Bing Places. Claim your listing at Bing Places for Business. BrightLocal found ChatGPT relies on Bing, though OpenAI has not confirmed that.
  • Yelp. Claim your Yelp page and match your name, address, phone and hours to your Google profile. All three AI surfaces cited Yelp in BrightLocal's study.
  • Your website. Give each service its own page, list the towns you serve, and put your name, address, phone and hours in plain text on every page. Websites were 42% of AI citations.
  • robots.txt. The robots.txt file is a small text file on your website that tells crawlers (the bots that read sites) where they may go. Make sure it does not block OAI-SearchBot.
  • Facebook page. Keep hours and contact details current. Google's AI surfaces lean on Facebook.
  • Reviews beyond Google. Ask happy customers to review you on Yelp or your trade's directory as well as Google.

A robots.txt rule that lets ChatGPT's search crawler in looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

OpenAI says on its crawler page that sites which opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that changes take about a day to apply. Our guide to the hidden file that can block ChatGPT shows how to check yours. For the listing claims, see which ChatGPT local business listings to claim.

Do you need special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode?

No. Google says there are no extra requirements and no special schema.org markup needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, according to Google's guide to AI features.

Schema is a small block of code on your website that labels your business details, like name, address, hours and services, so software can read them without guessing. It is not a Google requirement for AI features, and it is not a guarantee of anything.

We add it because it is the standard, tidy way to label your details for software. Google says it isn't required, and nobody has shown it causes AI mentions.

Think of it as neat handwriting on your work order. It does not do the job, but it stops the details being misread. Our plain-English guide to schema markup covers the basics.

Frequently asked questions

Can you pay Google for a better spot in AI Mode's free results?

Google says on its Business Profile help page that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google's guide says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Accurate details and good reviews are the honest route.

Can Google Search Console show AI Mode traffic on its own?

No. Cloutly's AI Mode guide says Search Console's AI report combines AI Overviews and AI Mode and has no AI Mode filter. Asking customers "how did you find us?" fills the gap.

Why did ChatGPT name a business from another town?

ChatGPT casts a much wider net than Google. In BrightLocal's 2026 study, 90% of ChatGPT's local results fell within 287km, against 64km for AI Mode and 38km for AI Overviews. Naming the exact towns you serve on your website gives ChatGPT a clearer signal.

How many reviews do you need to show up in AI answers?

The same Cloutly guide notes that Google has never published a review count or rating that AI Mode requires. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking, and the SOCi Local Visibility Index 2026, reported by BrightLocal, found businesses ChatGPT recommends average 4.3 stars. Steady, recent reviews on Google and Yelp are a sensible aim.

How often should you re-run the self-check?

Once a month is a good rhythm, plus once a few weeks after any big change, like new hours or a new website. AI answers shift between runs, so compare month to month rather than day to day.

The short version

In BrightLocal's 2026 study, the businesses it was watching showed up most often on Google Maps, in 66% of searches. AI Overviews, ChatGPT and AI Mode each named one about a third of the time, and they rarely agreed with each other.

The fix is not four separate projects. Whether a customer sees a Google AI Mode local business answer, an AI Overview or a ChatGPT list, the same five things cover most of it: your Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, your website and your robots.txt file. Make those complete and matching, then run the self-check (about 15 minutes a round, by our rough estimate) once a month.

Your goal is simple: whichever surface a customer uses, the right name, phone number and hours are waiting there.
