ChatGPT Local Business Listings: Which to Claim and How

You did the work on Google. Your profile is verified, the photos look good, and the reviews keep coming in. Then a customer mentions they asked ChatGPT for someone nearby, and your name never came up.

That stings. Here's the reason: ChatGPT local business listings mostly come from different places than Google Maps results do. The good news is you can claim every one of those listings yourself, at no cost.

OpenAI says ChatGPT may use unnamed "trusted third-party providers" for nearby business listings, and may show restaurant availability from OpenTable, Resy or Yelp. A 2026 BrightLocal study found Yelp in 80% of ChatGPT local answers, and another found Google Business Profile hardly used. So claim Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Business and Foursquare, and make every detail match.

Key takeaways

  • OpenAI says it may use outside providers for business listings but names only OpenTable, Resy and Yelp (for restaurants).
  • Yelp is the source ChatGPT cites most in outside studies, and Yelp now licenses its data to OpenAI.
  • Studies say ChatGPT hardly uses Google Business Profile, but keep it as your master copy.
  • Bing Places and Foursquare are reported links, not confirmed ones. Claim them anyway.
  • Make every detail match. One 2026 index found only 68% of the contact details ChatGPT and Perplexity showed matched the business's Google profile.

What does OpenAI say about ChatGPT local business listings?

OpenAI says ChatGPT can use your location to find local results, and may share it with "trusted third-party providers that help provide more local information, such as nearby business listings or weather reports." OpenAI does not name those providers on its ChatGPT search help page.

The one place OpenAI gets specific is restaurants. Depending on the restaurant, the same page says, ChatGPT may show availability from OpenTable, Resy or Yelp.

Everything else you read about ChatGPT's sources comes from people testing it from the outside. Useful, but not the same as OpenAI telling you.

The biggest outside test so far comes from BrightLocal, a local marketing software company. Its AI directory sources study (August 2026, 60,970 checks across the US, UK and Australia) found Yelp in 80% of ChatGPT's local answers. Google Business Profile didn't make ChatGPT's list of top sources.

Those sources move fast. When BrightLocal looked in November 2024, business websites made up 58% of ChatGPT's local sources, and Yelp didn't show up as a directory source at all.

Here's how solid each claim you'll hear really is:

Why care now? In BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 of US adults, use of ChatGPT and other AI tools for local recommendations rose from 6% the year before to 45%. For how ChatGPT turns those sources into a short list, see our breakdown of how ChatGPT recommends local businesses.

Does ChatGPT use your Google Business Profile?

ChatGPT hardly uses Google Business Profile, based on what outside studies have seen. Google Business Profile is the free listing that puts your business on Google Maps and Google Search.

BrightLocal's Local AI Visibility Study (September 2026, 200,085 local searches) put it plainly: "While Google Business Profile is important for AI Mode and AIO, it's hardly used by ChatGPT." AIO is short for AI Overviews, the AI summary at the top of Google results.

That gap shows up in the numbers. In the same study, the businesses BrightLocal tracks were named in 66% of Google Maps searches but only 33% of ChatGPT searches. A strong Maps ranking doesn't carry over on its own.

Don't let your Google profile go stale, though. Google's own AI answers lean on it, and Bing Places can copy your details from it, which makes it your master copy.

Mismatched details are part of the problem. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, as reported by BrightLocal, found only 68% of the contact details ChatGPT and Perplexity showed matched the business's own Google profile.

Why is Yelp the listing ChatGPT cites most?

Yelp is the listing outside studies see ChatGPT cite most, and the clearest documented reason is a 2026 deal: Yelp now licenses its reviews, ratings, photos and business details to OpenAI. Answers can include Yelp reviews, ratings and photos with Yelp branding and links, MarTech reported in July 2026.

The deal is non-exclusive and the terms weren't disclosed. According to TechWyse (July 2026), it covers 330 million user reviews and more than 8 million business listings. Yelp says it plans to bring its Request a Quote button into ChatGPT; as of the July 2026 reports it wasn't live.

BrightLocal's August 2026 directory study called Yelp "the most common source for ChatGPT in local search by some distance," with 99,281 ChatGPT citations.

There's a second reason Yelp matters. Microsoft's own Bing ranking help page says listings with more positive reviews and ratings on sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor count as more popular. That's about Bing, not ChatGPT, but it means a strong Yelp page helps you on Bing as well.

Say you run a two-van plumbing shop in Tulsa with 140 Google reviews and an unclaimed Yelp page that still shows a number you dropped two years ago. When ChatGPT pulls Yelp details into an answer, that old number is the one a customer could see.

Pro tip: log in to your Yelp business account now and then and reply to reviews. Yelp says a claimed page can show as unclaimed after a period of inactivity.

Does Bing Places feed ChatGPT?

Nobody has confirmed that Bing Places feeds ChatGPT directly. OpenAI doesn't name Bing Places as a source, and the studies that mention Bing only describe a link between the two.

Bing Places for Business is Microsoft's free listing service for Bing search and maps. BrightLocal's September 2026 study says "ChatGPT's relationships with Yelp and Bing mean it's surfacing slightly different businesses." That word, relationships, is as far as the evidence goes.

Blogs that call Bing a direct pipeline into ChatGPT are guessing. Still, Bing Places is free, and if your Google profile is already verified, Bing can import it and verify it for you automatically, according to Bing's Google sync help page. That's cheap insurance.

Is Foursquare still worth claiming in 2026?

Foursquare is still worth a few minutes in 2026, even though its consumer app is gone. Foursquare closed the City Guide app on December 15, 2024 and the web version on April 28, 2025, but business listings remain, according to its City Guide sunset page.

The same page says listings stay discoverable in Swarm, Foursquare's check-in app, and calls Foursquare "a major provider of Places data" to partners. Places data is the name, address, hours and map pin that other apps buy and show.

You may have read that Foursquare feeds ChatGPT through a partnership with OpenAI. That claim comes from SEO agency reports in 2025, which describe an "integration with OpenAI." Neither OpenAI nor Foursquare has announced one that we could find.

You may also see a percentage quoted for how much of ChatGPT's local results come from Foursquare. Skip it. It traces back to one unverified measurement.

Does Apple Business matter for ChatGPT?

Apple Business matters for ChatGPT because Apple's listing shows up among ChatGPT's top sources in outside studies, though far behind Yelp. Apple Business is Apple's free service for managing how your business looks on Apple Maps; it replaced Apple Business Connect on April 14, 2026.

If you had already claimed your place under the old name, Apple moved it over automatically, according to the Apple Newsroom announcement.

Your Apple place card shows your photos, hours and details across Apple Maps, Safari, Spotlight and more. It's what iPhone users see when they look you up in Apple Maps.

In BrightLocal's August 2026 directory study, Apple's listing made ChatGPT's list of top sources, though it was cited only 600 times.

Claim each listing, step by step

Claiming a listing is proving to a site like Yelp or Apple that you own the business, so you control what it says. Claim your ChatGPT local business listings in one sitting, with one master sheet open, so every listing gets the same details.

Which listings come first for your trade?

Claim all five eventually. If you only have an hour today, start here:

Step 1: Write your master business sheet

Write your business details once, exactly as you want them everywhere, before you open a single listing. Copy from this sheet every time instead of typing from memory.

  • Name: the name on your sign, with no extra keywords stuffed in
  • Address: one format, every time ("Suite 4" or "#4", pick one)
  • Phone: one main number, the one you answer
  • Hours: regular hours plus holiday hours
  • Website: the same page address every time
  • Main category: for example Plumber, Dentist or Bakery
  • Description: two sentences on what you do and where

Step 2: Claim your Yelp page

Go to Yelp for Business and search for your business name. If your page shows up with a claim option, start the claim; if it doesn't show up, add your business and Yelp helps you claim the new page, per Yelp's claim help page.

  • Enter your phone, website, category and address, then create your Yelp business account.
  • Verify by phone. If that doesn't work, Yelp asks you to send its support team a report.
  • Add photos, hours and your description from the master sheet.
  • No claim option? Someone already claimed the page, or it's new and waiting for approval.
  • More locations: Account Settings, then Additional Options, then Add another location.

Step 3: Import or claim your Bing Places listing

Sign in to Bing Places for Business with a Microsoft, Google, Facebook or work account, then choose Import from your Google Business Profile. If your Google listing is verified, Bing verifies the import for you.

  • No Google profile? Search for your business, claim it if it exists, or choose Create a new business, per Bing's create-a-listing help.
  • Fill in name, address, phone, category, website, hours and up to 100 photos.
  • Manual listings verify with a PIN by phone, mail, email or text. Not every option is offered to everyone.
  • Expect about 7-12 days to publish in North America and up to 2 weeks elsewhere, per Bing's getting-started help.

Step 4: Sign up for Apple Business and claim your place

Go to Apple Business, select Sign up now, and enter your organization name, address, your legal name and phone. Confirm the codes Apple sends to your email and phone, then agree to the terms.

  • Verify your organization in Settings, then Organization, then Verify Now. Apple asks for two methods, such as a D-U-N-S number (a business ID from Dun & Bradstreet) or EIN (your federal tax ID), a DNS record (a short line of text added to your domain's settings), or a business license, lease or utility bill.
  • Apple takes up to 5 business days to check, and you have 60 days to finish or the account is deleted, per Apple's sign-up guide.
  • Claim the place: Brands, then Locations, then Add Location, then Add single location. Enter the name and select locate to pick your existing pin, per Apple's add-a-location guide.
  • If your place is already on Apple Maps, you may be able to verify it by phone with the 4-digit code from Apple's call to the number Apple has on file.
  • Seeing "This location is already managed"? Add it anyway, then choose Request Transfer and upload documents such as a business license or utility bill. Review takes up to 5 business days.

Step 5: Claim your Foursquare listing

Search for your business in Foursquare's business portal, confirm it's your place, click Claim, and fill out the form that shows you own or manage it, per Foursquare's claiming help page.

  • Already claimed by someone else? Contact Foursquare support.
  • Not in the results? Foursquare has a help article for that. Older third-party guides say you create an account and add a new listing.
  • A 2021 SOCi guide says Foursquare calls your phone to verify. That may have changed.
  • Once it's claimed, look your business up in the Swarm app to check the details, and screenshot your claim confirmation.

Step 6: Keep Google Business Profile as the master copy

If you haven't claimed Google Business Profile yet, go to business.google.com/add, or find your business on Google Maps and choose Claim this business, then Manage now, per Google's claim help page. Verification options vary by business.

  • Make every change in Google first, then let Bing sync it.
  • Check every listing against your master sheet once a quarter, and after any move, new number or new hours.

Why does ChatGPT show the wrong hours or phone number?

ChatGPT shows wrong hours or an old phone number when a listing or page it reads still carries the old details. ChatGPT doesn't call you to check; it repeats what it finds.

Check name, address, phone, hours and website on every listing against your master sheet, down to "LLC" or no "LLC." Mark old or closed locations closed.

If your Bing listing is synced to Google, you can't edit it in Bing, and Bing uses Google's data to overwrite it, according to Bing's sync help. Edit in Google, then sync. Sync can also create a duplicate if you already had a Bing listing, so search for doubles afterward.

Clean, matching listings raise your odds but don't guarantee a mention. In BrightLocal's September 2026 study, two runs of the same ChatGPT local search shared only 23% of their businesses, and ChatGPT named 4.1 businesses on average. Our article on why ChatGPT recommendations change shows how to test fairly.

It won't make ChatGPT name you; nobody can promise that.

Frequently asked questions

What if someone else already claimed my listing?

On Yelp, a missing claim option means someone already claimed the page or it's waiting for approval. On Apple Business, add the place anyway and use Request Transfer with documents; review takes up to 5 business days. On Foursquare, contact support.

How long until a listing change shows up in ChatGPT?

Nobody publishes a timeline for ChatGPT. The listings have their own waits: Bing Places publishes in about 7-12 days in North America, and Apple's organization check takes up to 5 business days. Give it a few weeks, then test more than once.

Will claiming every listing get my business named by ChatGPT?

No, and anyone who promises that is guessing. Claimed, matching listings give ChatGPT accurate details to work with, which raises your odds. ChatGPT's answers change from one run to the next, so judge progress over many tests, not one.

I work from home. Do I have to show my address?

You don't always have to show a home address. An older BrightLocal guide says Yelp lets service-area businesses skip the address field. Check each site's form for a service-area setting before you type a home address in.

The short version

So claim all five ChatGPT local business listings from one master sheet, keep Google as the master copy, and check that every listing matches, down to the suite number.

None of this guarantees ChatGPT names you, and answers will keep shifting from one run to the next. What it does do is make sure that wherever ChatGPT looks you up, the right phone number is waiting.
